Butchers
Post ProductionSynopsis
Montevideo, 1971. When the government imposes a ban on beef in a cattle-ranching country, a black market emerges. To survive the crisis, José, a Galician immigrant, sets up a clandestine slaughterhouse with the help of his daughter Rosita. What begins as a desperate family operation soon becomes a thriving underground network supplying contraband meat to an entire starving city. But the profits come with dangers. Rival butchers want control, corrupt authorities demand bribes, and the military regime intensifies its repression, turning the illegal meat trade into a battleground. Increasingly shrouded in secrecy, José associates with ruthless characters and becomes a key figure in the illicit market, even as the violence and paranoia of the era close in on him. Observing from within, Rosita longs for a life beyond blood and secrecy. Torn between family loyalty and her growing desire for freedom, she witnesses José's ambition and the brutal price of survival under the dictatorship. Inspired by true events, Matarifes is a visceral historical thriller in which survival fuels ambition, ambition breeds violence, and one family's struggle to survive becomes entangled in the political upheaval that will reshape a nation.
